Have Questions About the Five Year Undergraduate/MPH Program?
You've come to the right place! This page provides answers to the most common questions about the program. We have organized the information into clear sections to help you find what you need quickly and easily.

Students should apply in the sixth (6th) semester (i.e., spring of junior year).

The UG/MPH application is found in SOPHAS Express.

The application includes:

  • Personal statement
  • Unofficial copy of the transcript (IAR)
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation, two (2) of which should be from Brown faculty members
  • Resume/CV
  • SOPHAS Express application fee

All MPH students must complete the following:

  • 12 total courses
  • MPH Practicum
  • Integrative Learning Experience (ILE) - thesis or capstone course
  • PHP0310 Health Care in the United States
  • PHP0320 Introduction to Public Health
  • At least one PHP course that counts towards the MPH degree (>/= 1000 level)
  • No more than 4 courses outstanding for the primary undergraduate concentration and/or premed requirements
  • Submission of a course plan

No! Students in ANY undergraduate concentration can be in the UG/MPH program, as long as they are able to complete all of the requirements for both their chosen concentration and the MPH program.

By the time students graduate from Brown with an undergraduate degree, they must have taken 5.5 courses that count towards the MPH degree including the following:

  • Data Analysis 1
  • Data Analysis 2
  • Epidemiologic Research Methods
  • Applied Public Health: Systems and Practice (half)
  • Two (2) additional MPH courses >/= 1000 level

The Graduate School requires that students in the UG/MPH program take a minimum of 6.5 courses in the fifth (5th) year - this number cannot be reduced!

The MPH degree requires twelve (12) total courses (5.5 as an undergraduate and 6.5 as a graduate student).

Students may double count up to two (2) courses towards both their undergraduate degree and the MPH degree, but no more.

All SPH graduate students are required to complete the following non credit requirements:

  • PHP 2000 Foundations in Public Health
  • CITI Training
  • IRB Basics
  • MPH core group advising meetings (senior year)

Students will be asked to declare an MPH concentration in the fall of their senior year.

Students may still go abroad, but they cannot travel in their senior year.

Yes, students may still write a senior thesis; however, the senior thesis does not fulfill the Integrative Learning Experience (ILE) requirement for the MPH degree.

Students must complete an Integrative Learning Experience (ILE) as part of the MPH degree, and it can take the form of a master's thesis or a capstone course.

Yes, students can still choose to fulfill the premed requirements and be a part of the program.

Nothing changes about the way undergraduate students pay tuition until they graduate. Once students matriculate into the Graduate School for the 5th year, they become graduate students, and tuition is billed per course instead of one lump sum.

Graduate tuition is billed per course and varies by program - the most recent MPH tuition rates can be found on the Student Financial Services website.

No! If students are receiving scholarship and/or financial aid from Brown as an undergraduate, that funding will remain in place while students are still undergrads.

Students must decide in the spring of junior year if they plan to proceed with the program in the fall of senior year; however, there is no deposit required until spring of senior year. There is no penalty if a student decides in spring of senior year not to pursue the program.

Students are required to pay a deposit in the spring of senior year in order to hold a spot for their fifth (5th) year.

The Graduate School bills students for the following:

  • Graduate student activities fee
  • Student recreation fee
  • Health Services fee
  • Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), which can be waived with proof of other equivalent health insurance

Yes, all applicants are automatically considered for merit scholarships in the 5th year - no additional steps are required. Merit awards typically cover 15-50% of total tuition, based on the strength of the application.

Yes, students may defer enrolling in their fifth (5th) year for one (1) year. This decision must be made in the spring of senior year, and students must pay a deposit to hold their spot for the following fall semester.
