Five Year Undergraduate/MPH

A rigorous program in professional public health education open to Brown undergraduates of any concentration.

Students accepted into the five year integrated program will complete the degree requirements for both their undergraduate degree and an MPH degree in a five-year period. Students must take 12 total course credits toward the MPH—5.5 during their first four years and 6.5 courses in the fifth year.

Introducing the Five-Year Integrated Undergraduate/MPH (UG/MPH) Degree Program

Students work closely with faculty to design an academic program that meets the core requirements of both the undergraduate degree and the MPH degree, while tailoring the courses, practicum and thesis or capstone to the educational goals of the individual students. Students graduating from the program will be in an excellent position to enter careers in public health research or public health practice. Graduates will also have excellent backgrounds to enter medical school, doctorate programs in public health areas or other advanced degree options including law, public policy, the sciences or humanities.

Application process

Students should apply to the program in their sixth (6th) semester to maximize the planning and mentoring for the program. The application deadline is January 15, 2025.

Prerequisites for application

  • Applicants must be in the sixth (6th) semester
  • Applicants must have taken both of the following:
    • PHP0310 Health Care in the United States
    • PHP0320 Introduction to Public Health 
  • Applicants must have taken at least one PHP course that counts towards the MPH (>/= 1000 level)
  • Applicants must submit a course plan demonstrating how they will complete the 5.5 MPH courses required as an undergraduate
  • Applicants must have no more than 4 courses outstanding for their primary undergraduate concentration and/or premed requirements in their senior year
  • Applicants cannot be planning to travel abroad in their senior year

Program Requirements

  • Students in the UG/MPH Program must complete all of the requirements for their chosen undergraduate concentration and the MPH degree. No more than two (2) courses can be used to meet requirements of both the undergraduate concentration and the MPH degree.
  • Students must complete 12 total course credits with a minimum of 6.5 course credits taken in the 5th year (5.5 MPH courses should be taken while still an undergraduate).
  • Required Non-Credit Activities
    • PHP2000 Foundations in Public Health
    • CITI Training (students must submit certificate after completing course)
    • IRB Basics
    • MPH core group advising meetings - senior year (approximately 1 hour per week)
  • MPH Practicum
  • Integrated Learning Experience (ILE)
    Students must complete either a thesis or a capstone course

Course Requirements

Students must complete 12 total course credits with a minimum of 6.5 course credits taken in the 5th year:

  • MPH Core Courses and Electives
    • Five (5) core courses
    • Three (3) MPH general electives
       
  • MPH Concentration Courses

Students must select one of the following concentrations and take four (4) approved courses that fulfill the concentration requirements:

  • Epidemiology
  • Global Health
  • Health Behavior
  • Health Services
  • Interdisciplinary
  • Maternal and Child Health
