Accelerated Master of Public Health for Clinicians Program

The Brown University School of Public Health’s Accelerated MPH for Clinicians is a fast-paced, in-person program designed to deliver an academically rigorous and comprehensive public health education to professionals with prior medical or clinical healthcare education.

The Accelerated MPH for Clinicians program comprises:

Clinician

  • 10.5-units (i.e., the equivalent of 42 semester credits) that students can complete in one year (i.e., July – May), beginning with an online session in the summer.
  • A curriculum that enables clinical professionals to achieve a deep and broad understanding of public health at a pace that complements their existing expertise and experience.

The Brown University School of Public Health has substantial strengths in teaching students how to translate public health principles into policy and practice. Drawing on expertise from faculty within biostatistics, epidemiology, health services, policy and practice, and behavioral sciences, the Accelerated MPH program is designed to transform clinicians into experts in public health.

Program Curriculum

The following nine courses form the curriculum through which students will develop the program competencies:

  • Leadership & Communication
  • Health Policy & Equity 
  • Introduction to Methods in Epidemiologic Research or Foundations in Epidemiologic Research Methods
  • Needs Analysis & Program Planning (includes 80 hours of practicum in a clinical setting)
  • Applied Biostatistics for Public Health
  • Clinical Trials
  • Survey Research Methods or Qualitative Methods in Health Research
  • Putting Research into Practice with Implementation Science
  • Integrated Learning Experience

Program Competencies

Students who complete the Accelerated MPH for Clinicians program should be able to do the following:

  • Design clinical trials
  • Write a statistical analysis plan for clinical trials 
  • Complete a research project to address a public health problem
  • Design a quality improvement project within a healthcare system
  • Apply principles of implementation science to program design
  • Apply ethical principles to public health practice

Applicants must either possess an advanced clinical degree (e.g., MD, PhD, DO, PharmD, DDS, DMD, OD, DVM, DNP, DPT or the equivalent for international students) or be a medical student who has completed at least two years of medical school.
