Applied Epidemiology for Public Health Practice

Harnessing data to improve population health.

Applied Epidemiology for Public Health Practice bridges scientific research and real-world practice. It focuses on using rigorous epidemiologic tools to solve pressing health challenges. It is the practice of monitoring disease patterns, identifying outbreaks and changes in disease patterns and evaluating the effectiveness of health interventions.

This concentration prioritizes the essential, hands-on tools used by practitioners every day: rather than focusing on a single disease or population, this concentration emphasizes epidemiologic methods that can be applied across a wide range of health challenges.

In this concentration, you won’t just study the “how” of disease spread; you will master the “what now?” You’ll learn to analyze complex data sets to support actionable strategies that improve population health.

Student Profile

You are curious about patterns—who gets sick, who stays healthy and why those differences exist. You are drawn to data, but more importantly, to what data can do when used well: inform decisions and prevent harm.

As a concentrator in Applied Epidemiology for Public Health Practice, you will learn how to design studies, analyze complex data and interpret findings in ways that matter to public health practice. You will gain fluency in the tools epidemiologists use every day—designing surveillance systems and evaluating and communicating the effects of public health interventions—so you can address urgent public health challenges like infectious disease outbreaks. This concentration is for students who want skills that travel across topics and settings, not training limited to a single disease or population.

As a graduate and public health professional, you envision yourself applying epidemiologic methods to reduce disease burden and address inequities—whether in a health department, research institution, health care system, nonprofit organization or policy-focused role. You want to be the person who brings clarity to complex health questions and credibility to public health action. Applied Epidemiology prepares you to do exactly that: to turn evidence into insight, and insight into impact.

Skills You Will Master

  • Understanding patterns of health and disease across populations, including who is most affected and why.
  • Designing epidemiologic studies to answer real public health questions using observational and surveillance data.
  • Analyzing public health data using statistical methods to identify trends, risk factors and outcomes.
  • Interpreting data for decision-making, translating results into clear, actionable insights for policymakers and practitioners.
  • Using surveillance systems and administrative data to monitor health events and evaluate interventions.
  • Assessing causal relationships, not just correlations, to understand what truly drives health outcomes.
  • Communicating epidemiologic findings clearly, both in writing and verbally, to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Applying epidemiologic methods to better understand health inequities, across populations.

Three courses are required to complete the Applied Epidemiology for Public Health Practice concentration.

Complete the following courses:

  • PHP2210: Surveillance Methods for Applied Epidemiology (Spring Year 1)
  • PHP2180: Interpretation and Application of Epidemiology (Spring Year 2)

Complete one of the following courses:

  • PHP1720: Environmental Exposure Assessments in Practice (Fall)
  • PHP1855: Infectious Disease Modeling (Fall)
  • PHP2015: Foundations of Spatial Analysis in Public Health (Spring)
  • PHP2040: Survey Research Methods (Spring)

You have space for 3 + electives. You can use them to create an elective bundle that reflects your unique passions and interests.
