The MPH Core

Required courses to develop analytical skills and knowledge in key areas of public health.

Regardless of their chosen concentration, every Brown MPH student begins their journey with a shared core curriculum. These six required courses serve as the intellectual foundation of your degree, ensuring that all graduates possess a unified toolkit for solving complex health challenges. The core covers the full spectrum of public health competencies, ranging from the rigorous quantitative skills needed to interpret data to the leadership and policy frameworks required to effect change.

Part I: Quantitative & Methodological Foundation (3 credits)

This three course sequence, taken in your first year, gives you rigorous analytical skills needed to interpret complex data:

Biostatistics & Applied Data Analysis Sequence (2 Credits) Students must complete the following two-course sequence in their first year. Ideally, these courses are taken consecutively.

  • STAT2507 (PHP2507): Biostatistics & Applied Data Analysis I (Fall Year 1)
  • STAT2508 (PHP2508): Biostatistics & Applied Data Analysis II (Spring Year 1)

Concentration Note: Some Applied Epidemiology students may replace this sequence with STAT 2510 and STAT 2511. Please consult your concentration lead for approval.

Epidemiologic Research Methods (1 Credit)

  • EPI2120 (PHP2120): Intro to Methods in Epidemiologic Research (Fall Year 1)

Concentration Note: Students in the Applied Epidemiology and Causal Methods Epidemiology concentrations are exempt from EPI2120. Instead, they must take EPI2140 and EPI2150, respectively.

Part II: Universal Public Health Competencies (3 credits)

These three courses address essential leadership, policy and behavioral frameworks:

  • PHP2079: Public Health Leadership and Communication (Fall Year 1)
  • PHP2078: Health Law, Policy and Systems (Spring Year 1)
  • BSS2355 (PHP2355): Fundamentals of Behavioral and Social Sciences (Offered Fall or Spring)

Part III: Non-Credit Requirements

The following activities are mandatory grading requirements and must be completed during the first semester of enrollment:

  1. PHP2000: Foundations in Public Health
  2. CITI Training: (Student must submit completion certificate)
  3. Semester One Core Adviser Small Group Sessions
